Plum

Plum is a lipstick colour family of deep purple and purple-red shades, named after the skin of the ripe fruit.

Plum sits further toward purple than berry on the colour wheel. In this encyclopedia, a shade is classed as plum when its hue angle falls in the purple range and its lightness is medium or deeper. Lighter shades at the same hue are pink, and very muted ones are mauve. Every plum counts as a cool-toned shade.

Plum is one of the deepest lipstick families, so it shows strong contrast on fair and light skin. On deep skin it sits closer to the skin’s own depth and reads as rich rather than stark.

A lip liner is useful with deep shades like plum, where any unevenness at the edge is easy to see. Finish changes the colour noticeably: a matte plum reads deep and flat, close to its hex, while a satin or gloss plum looks lighter and brighter where the light catches it.
