Transfer-proof

Transfer-proof describes a lip formula that, once set, leaves little or no colour on cups, glasses, skin or clothing.

Transfer-proof products, often labelled transfer-resistant, usually rely on the same setting film as long-wear formulas: the product goes on wet, part of it evaporates, and the remaining layer grips the lips. Until it has fully set it can still transfer, so most need a minute or two of drying with the lips apart.

The claim applies to the colour layer only. A gloss or balm added on top brings back some transfer, since that top layer never sets. Oily foods also break down many formulas faster than water does.

Most transfer-proof products are liquid lipsticks with a matte finish, though satin and glossy versions exist. A lip stain is naturally low-transfer because its colour stays in the surface of the lips rather than on top. Creamy satin bullet lipsticks do not set, so they tend to transfer more.
